Wassail

We held our Wassail on 13th January in rather windy conditions!

Mulled cider and apple juice. Cock and Magpie Morris, bless the trees 'doff' our hats. Its traditional to fire a gun through the trees but we made do with party poppers!

About Us

We are a community group promoting the use of the Inkerman Park (aka Wasp Nest) in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. We organise occasional events on the Inkerman Park.

In conjunction with the Borough Council we held a public consultation in 2010/11 and from the results of that we have a plan to enhance the park.

Plans include:

New playground (completed with a grant from Biffa)

Apple orchard (completed with trees donated by Transition and CBC)

Surfaced footpath and cycle route (completed with a grant from Biffa)

More tree planting (completed with Awards for All Grant)

Replace wooden benches (completed with a grant from Awards for All)

Noticeboard (completed with a grant from Awards for All)

Surfaced perimeter walk

Potential Housing Development

The Chesterfield Borough Council's 'Sites and Boundaries' document of 2013 had the Inkerman identified as a site for potentially 18 houses.

Friends of the Inkerman were opposed to this. We applied for QE2 Field status in conjunction with Chesterfield Borough Council which was accepted and the deed has been signed.

We have been advised by the QE2 authorities:

The protection afforded the site is such that only a compulsory purchase order can supersede the covenant FIT place on a site. If this unlikely event does occur, the benefit is that you have the backing and legal support of a Royally-founded national charitable trust. The protection only allows for ancillary developments to the benefit of the site, such as pavilions, changing rooms, children’s play areas, etc
